FOOD & WINE We buy our bakery goods in Beaumes De Venise (B d V), but make an early
pilgrimage to LE CLERC, a large grocery store in Carpentras for gas, meats, cheeses, dry goods, paper goods, cosmetics, etc. You return to B d V, by turning left at
the T (olive oil cooperative in front of you), over the bridge, and almost immediate right turn
toward Aubignan, and from there into Carpentras town, where you follow the one way street surrounding the inner city until you see the sign for
Avignon to your right. Turn right . Then the signs for Le Clerc will be obvious - about 1/2 mile from that right turn, you make a left turn and
it will be on your right. Outdoor market in B d V is on Tuesday, on Friday in Carpentras, and Vaison la Romaine on Tuesday. You can elect to
drink bottled water, but the water in the kitchen sink is fine to drink.

THIS & THAT Our garden is still being developed. Each year we plant a bit more.
The plants need to be watched in July and August when the heat scorches the earth and the roots are starved for water.
If you like to garden and wouldn’t mind weeding a little, then help yourself. If you see anything drying out please call the Salvis. A
gardner shows up weekly.
One year we had a wonderful family of wild boars who ate their way through our garden all summer. We were very charmed. We don’t
dare hope for another occurence of this but if you see one, keep your distance, and consider yourself lucky.
The doctor in Beaumes de Venise speaks English; we have never had occasion to visit him, but this is what our renters tell us.
If you need him, I would drive to town and ask where his office is from one of the bar keepers or the newspaper shop which now carries
the Herald Tribune! Hurrah.

DAY TRIPS
Lyone: 2 hours each way. Stop in Tain L‘Hermitage on the way back and buy chardonnays. It is a beautiful
city, and like all big cities, hard to find a parking place. Sometimes, I leave the car at the edge of the city and take a taxi to the center
where I can walk around without worrying about getting back to where I started.
Nimes: 1.25 hours away. I liked the sense of space and the Roman ruins, although I went primarily for the art museum.
I like it enough to go back often.
Aix en Provence: An easy drive of 1.5 hours on the autoroute, much longer if you take the back roads. It is a fascinating walled
city with scores of restaurants and a real university town-feeling. I spent six weeks there and would go back now to sit on the Cours Mirabeau
and people watch.
Uzes and Pont du Gard: You will stand in awe of this Roman aquaduct. It is the
largest remaining aquaduct over a beautiful river. You can sunbathe, and well worth the effort of going to see. Go on the same road as to Nimes,
the road through Avignon is much more arduous. Uzes is a wonderful town with castle and fortress and excellent restaurants.
